Singer-Songwriter
Leah writes songs about building a home that is both physical and spiritual. They are about seeing the beauty in what is around you and, if there is no beauty, taking on the responsibility to create beauty. Some songs are beautiful, some are funny, some are political, some are more personal and some come from prayers that she has written as part of her work as a cantor in the Jewish world. Many songs have mantras within them or moments for the audience to sing along with a chorus.
Leah usually writes in a more folk-Jazz style, with hints of world music influence thrown in. Her last album was a departure from those genres into a pop sound. She has largely returned to her roots as an acoustic singer-songwriter, so that’s usually what you can expect at a show.
Here you will find videos to watch and links to albums she has released.
LEAH’S FAVORITE LIVE PERFORMANCES
Here are videos from some of Leah’s favorite performances over a decade of being a songwriter!
This performance was part of a documentary about lake swimmers who formed a community during the pandemic. This video was filmed during the winter on a 32 degree day!
This is Leah’s pro-choice anthem, from her latest album, sung at one of the best street festivals in Chicago!
This is a video from Leah’s first album release concert at PianoForte Chicago. Her dad, David Cowen, is playing cello. The concert sold out an 80-seat theater!
This was a very special performance of “In the Garden” at Roger’s Park Beach! Leah wrote the song for her mom, Wendy Segal, and this video features her scatting and singing along.
“Throughout my years as a fan, I have witnessed Leah’s music transform the human soul and bring people together in community, where all may be themselves without judgment. Leah’s music deeply encourages transformation through direct action, helping others discover the power that has always been within themselves to bring real, positive change to the human experience.”—
